Counseling
The benefits of counseling are vast.
Working on personal problems in counseling or therapy can help bring added meaning to your life, help you to learn excellent conflict-resolution skills and improve your marriage. Counseling can teach you techniques to relieve stress and overcome depression and anxiety, improve your self-esteem and many other issues.
Gilstrap & Associates offers a wide range of counseling services to the greater Orlando and surrounding communities. Depending on your needs is the deciding factor on the approach that we’ll take to help you.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy
Accelerated Resolution Therapy® is a revolutionary new approach to mental health counseling. A.R.T. shares similarities with other eye-movement therapies and was developed as a quicker, more effective method of therapy.
Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories
RTM's non-traumatizing visual exercises uses the client’s own imagery to separate the traumatic memories from their traumatic feelings, providing clients with relief from their PTSD symptoms.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
DBT has now become the go-to therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), but it's also effective in treating a wide range of other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders.
Adult/Individual Counseling/Therapy
This is the most common type of mental health treatment. It is usually recommended when it is determined that the client’s problems are primarily due to an internal state of mind rather than outside causes. The focus in individual therapy is on better understanding the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes that create negative self-esteem and present obstacles to having a more healthy and productive life. We explore the past for the roots of the problems, but we put more emphasis on the client’s current life difficulties.
Family Counseling/Therapy
When the primary problems are centered around conflicting family relations, family therapy is often the treatment of choice. The difficulties may be between a married couple and their extended family, such as in-laws, siblings, and so on. The most common reason for family therapy is the presence of unresolved conflicts between parents and children. These relationships can be extremely complex. For example, one parent may be more aligned with a particular child against the partner and the other children. Family therapy takes great skill. We have several therapists in our Orlando office that specialize and are experts in this area.
Child/Adolescent Counseling/Therapy
When one child in a family is having significant problems or symptoms, we may recommend individual counseling or therapy for that child. With younger children, the therapy is often based on a mix of talk therapy and play therapy in our activity room. With older children and adolescents, the emphasis is on talk therapy. At the Gilstrap & Associates Orlando office, our counselors help children learn healthy and effective ways of communicating.
We also collaborate with Central Florida school systems because of our belief that we can do our best work by understanding and working with all the components of a child’s world.
Relationship Counseling/Therapy
Some people encounter problems in the relationships they have with other people. These people often benefit from couples/marriage counseling. The staff at Gilstrap & Associates is trained to provide many types of relationship counseling. Relationship counseling is not limited to people who are involved in a monogamous relationship.
Relationship counseling can help resolve issues between loved ones, siblings, close friends or business partners. Our approach in relationship counseling facilitates improved communication and conflict resolution.
Group Counseling/Therapy
Many clients do well in group treatment. At the Gilstrap & Associates Orlando office, we offer groups for children and adults. Group therapy can be the choice of treatment or it can be done in conjunction with individual or couples therapy. It is generally most helpful for clients experiencing relationship problems such as anger, body image, loneliness, choosing inappropriate friends and lovers, and having interpersonal conflicts with peers and authority figures in work or school settings. The groups provide a safe and supportive environment for openness and sharing of personal thoughts and feelings.
Crisis Responder Counseling/Therapy
As an EAP provider to municipalities, the staff at Gilstrap & Associates possess the qualifications, skills and experience necessary to evaluate and treat crisis responders. We have certified grief counselors available as well as counselors experienced in treating the trauma that is experienced by police officers, firefighters and EMTs.
Phone or Online Counseling/Therapy
Therapy can be just a call or click away. We understand that office visits are not always possible. We can work within the constraints of your busy schedule. There are also clients that have been seen in our office and have moved or have been referred to one of our counselors that do not live in the Central Florida area. For these cases, Gilstrap & Associates offer the option of telephone counseling or e-counseling on a secure web camera.
This service is especially helpful for clients with agoraphobia. Initial therapy begins this way until we build the skills necessary to come into the office.
