Review:

The Body Book for Younger Girls by Valorie Schaefer is a wonderful aid for parents (or other caregivers) seeking to introduce their daughters to changes associated with puberty. As with many books published by American Girl, it quickly captivates the young reader’s attention with its fun, applicable style and colorful illustrations. The book includes information about physical body development, beginning menstruation, hygiene, nutrition, and making healthy life choices.

Perhaps most helpful, is the way it presents these changes with sensitivity to the social and emotional impacts of puberty as well. While it is written for a younger reader (approximately ages 8-10), it is most helpful when it is read along with an adult. The book, like puberty in general, sparks many questions and sometimes uncomfortable feelings. Being present while your child learns is the best way to ensure her understanding and normalize any feelings of anxiety.
